Postech No. 1 in ’14 college rankings

Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech) took the No. 1 spot in the 2014 college rankings unveiled on Monday by the JoongAng Ilbo, making this the second consecutive year the school has placed first.

The evaluation scored 95 four-year colleges nationwide on a 300-point scale, taking into consideration educational quality (90 points), globalization (50 points), faculty research achievements (100 points) and reputation and alumni representation in society (60 points).

Universities autonomously decided whether to separate their main campus and satellite campus for the assessment.

The four schools that trailed Postech were Kaist, Sungkyunkwan University, Korea University (Anam campus) and Seoul National University, respectively, all taking the same ranks as last year.

Yonsei University (Seoul campus) placed sixth, followed by Hanyang University (Seoul campus) at No. 7 and Chung-Ang University (Seoul campus) at No. 8. Kyung Hee University and Sogang University both tied for the No. 9 rank.

Hanyang and Chung-Ang universities held on to their positions from last year, while Yonsei University (Seoul campus) and Sogang University each slipped one spot. Kyung Hee University inched up one place after coming in 10th last year.

Dongguk University (Seoul campus) came in at No. 11, the highest ever for the school, climbing from the No. 44 slot in 2005. This year also marked the first time in three years that Seoul National University of Science and Technology made the top 20.

In ranks 11 to 20, eight schools changed places from last year. Dongguk University (Seoul campus) climbed two slots, Konkuk University climbed three and the University of Seoul was up five. 

Data from the study showed that Dongguk University’s advancement was due in part to its improvement in faculty research achievements and globalization. Compared to last year, the school climbed up nine spots in the former category, from No. 13 to No. 4, and one place in terms of globalization, from No. 4 to No. 3. 

Seoul National University of Science and Technology’s meteoric rise appeared to have been aided by their faculty research achievements. The school topped the list in that category after coming in at No. 11 last year.

The rankings, which began in 1994, are part of an annual event marking the anniversary of the JoongAng Media Network’s foundation. It is intended to help increase competition among domestic universities.
